Spiced Pumpkin Bread

Technically, it's not quite officially winter yet, so if you're a pumpkin lover, you will love this recipe. It really makes your house smell like the holidays while baking in the oven. This Pumpkin bread recipe has lots of spice (not the hot kind) so this is sure to please anyone from adults and even kids!

Spiced Pumpkin Bread

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Use a greased loaf pan (9 x 5 x 3)

1 1/2 C sugar

1/2 C vegetable oil

1 large egg

1 (15oz) canned pumpkin

1 1/2 C all purpose flour

1/2 t ground cloves

2 t cinnamon

1/2 t nutmeg

1/2 t allspice

1/4 t salt

1/2 t baking soda

1/4 t baking powder

Beat sugar & oil. Mix in egg and pumpkin. Add cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. Mix thoroughly. Slowly add in flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Mix well. Pour into loaf pan. Baking time is between 60-70 min.

We have 2 new Beers on tap that pair well with the chilly winter air! The first is:

Widmer Drop Top which is an American Ale with a clean flavor and fruity aroma. The velvet texture is from the use of Honey malt and a touch of milk sugar.

The next beer is Redhook Winterhook. It has roasted chocolate notes that smooth out the quick, spicy hop finish. The rich body and nutty, malty backbone make this winter ale slighlty naughty and very nice.

New Cocktail/Cordials

We are very excited to introduce a new Cocktail that has been added to our menu: a Limoncello Tini. This yummy martini consists of Absolut Vodka, Villa Massa Limoncello, lemonade and a splash of club soda, served with a lemon wheel.

Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur that is mainly produced in Southern Italy. It is also served as an after dinner drink to aid in digestion.

We are teaming up with Toys for Tots now through December 22. Toys for Tots is a program that is run by the United States Marine Corps and was founded back in 1947. The mission is to collect new, unwrapped toys to distribute them to needy children throughout the community. This is NY 54's second year collecting toys and we hope to fill up our boxes quickly! Have you ever gone to mix that cake you've been meaning to make and are not sure if your eggs that have been sitting in the refrigerator are still good? Most of the time, eggs are good even past the expiration date that are put on the packaging. Here's a quick tip to figure out if eggs are still good to use:

1. Fill up a medium size bowl or pot with cool water

2. Put the eggs in question in the bowl

3. If the eggs stay on the bottom of the bowl, they are still good!

4. If any of the eggs float to the top, they are spoiled. Throw them out!

It's that time of year again for Pumpkin Everything!! The weather has changed a bit and cooler weather is just on the horizon.....or is this just wishful thinking of all Arizonians? To most, the pumpkin is a symbolization of autumn. Why not celebrate this with some delicious, homemade Pumpkin Cheesecake! All of our cheesecakes are completely homemade from scratch, never frozen! We alternate the flavor's often and decided it was time to start making Pumpkin again. We will also be carrying a Pumpkin beer which we expect to have by the end of this week.

Facts about Pumpkins: although it is not completely known where the pumpkin was first grown, as far back as 7000- 5500 BC the first seeds were located in the Mexico region. The main nutrients of a Pumpkin are lutein and alpha and beta carotene.

How to Store Fresh Herbs

Hopefully if you are doing cooking at home, you are experimenting with lots of fresh herbs. Herbs can add incredible flavor and depth to any dish, especially when fresh instead of dried. Whether you are purchasing fresh cilantro, parsley, rosemary or basil, storing these herbs and making them last can be especially challenging. How many times have you been excited that you had fresh basil or parsley on hand for your recipe, only to find out that it's wilted, brown or even slimy? The best way to store your fresh herbs is to take the time as soon as you get home from the grocery store to prepare them for storage. It's very simple! First thing is to wash each herb thoroughly. Next, lightly pat your herbs with a paper towel. Make sure you have some storage bags on hand, I suggest Quart size. You will want to have 1 or 2 paper towels ready, then lay your washed herbs on the edge of the paper towel and gently roll until they are lightly encased in the towel. Make sure you mark on the outside of your storage bag which herb is going to be stored in there along with the date. As long as they are completely enclosed in the paper towel and put inside of the storage bag (remember to let out the air before zipping it up) your herbs will last twice as long in your refrigerator! Voila!

Here are a few things you may or may not know about NY 54!!

We were originally located on Rural and Ray Rds. in Chandler and first opened in 2000.
Our italian hero bread is baked fresh daily. Since there are no preservatives in it, the bread only lasts 1 day. After the bread is hard in a few days, we grind that down to make our homemade bread crumbs which we season and then use to bread our eggplant and chicken cutlets. We also use it in our meatballs.
Our meatballs are completely homemade. We hand roll each meatball. We have never eaten frozen meatballs and we don't expect our customers to either!
All of our deli sandwiches are served only with Boar's Head meats and cheeses, which is the highest quality of meat/cheese you can buy.
Our pizza dough and sauce is made fresh daily. We make our own dough and stretch it when it is ordered.
Our marinara sauce is homemade daily
Our wings are fresh, never frozen. There's about 1 3/4 lb in each order.
The chicken for our chicken cutlets, Chicken Piccata and Chicken Marsala is fresh, (never frozen!) boneless, skinless chicken breasts that are hand filleted.
The eggplant for our Eggplant Parm is fresh eggplant that we slice thin on the slicer, hand bread and fry in extra virgin olive oil.
Our Red Wine Vinaigrette is our homemade dressing
Our sausage is completely fresh! We bake it and slice it ourselves
We keep our restaurant meticulously clean! You could say we are fanatics about it!

Recipe: Boar's Head Potato Pave

Are you looking for something new to make for dinner, something else then just your regular baked potato side dish? Try this recipe from Boar's Head! It's sure to please with it's rich and creamy potatoes baked to a golden brown. This isn't any ordinary potato au gratin recipe!

Yukon Gold Potato Pave

3-4 servings

1 1/2 lbs Yukon Gold Potatoes, unpeeled and washed
4 oz. Boar's Head Pancetta, sliced

1/4 C Shallots, finely chopped

1 t Garlic, finely chopped

1/4 stick Unsalted butter

1/8 C All purpose flour

1 C Heavy cream

1/2 t Kosher salt

1/2 t Freshly ground black pepper

1/2 C Chives, finely chopped

1 C Boar's Head Pecorino Romano Cheese, grated

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Slice potatoes into 1/4" thick ovals (leave skin intact) and place into boiling water. Cook potatoes for 10 minutes. Drain potatoes and set aside. Cut pancetta into small pieces. Saute pancetta in butter over medium-high heat for 2 minutes. Add shallots and garlic and saute for 1 minute. Add flour and mix with a wire whisk until thoroughly incorporated. Add heavy cream, salt and pepper and cook until thickened. Remove from heat and fold in chives and cheese. Spray the inside of a medium-size roasting pan with non-stick spray. Cover the bottom of the pan with a layer of potatoes. Place 1/3 of the sauce mix over potatoes. Repeat this procedure 3 times ending with sauce mix as the final top layer. Cover with foil and cook in oven for 30 minutes. Increase oven temperature to 375 degrees and cook uncovered for an additional 15 minutes.
